Indians: Despite some worry from fans the team isn’t leaving Cleveland
By Chad Porto
Despite some cans concerns, The Indians aren’t leaving Cleveland.
How or why the rumor started is irrelevant. The Indians are nearing the end of their lease with Progressive Field and some fans have taken to conspiracy theories to try and spin the situation into something it’s not, with some talking about how the Indians could relocate to Nashville or somewhere else.
"With the lease nearing its end, owner Paul Dolan slashing the team’s payroll over the past year and seeking a minority owner, there has been speculation the Indians could be planning a move — something Clevelanders fear after the Browns bolted in 1995."
Yet, ESPN is reporting that not only are the Dolans not moving or selling the team, but they’re in talks for another 15-year lease to play ball in Cleveland, at Progressive Field. Governor Mike DeWine was very adamant about his belief in the Dolans keeping the team in Ohio. Going as far as to say that Indians’ owner Paul Dolan is “committed” to keeping the team in Cleveland.
The rumor started to pick up steam when the announcement of a new team nickname was being mulled. Even fans in our very own comment section speculated that the name change is only being done to make the team more attractive for possible suitors.
The new nickname rumor has clear ties to the city of Cleveland
If that isn’t enough to quell your fears, one Twitter user who claims to have inside information is saying that the team name is going to be the Guardians. An homage to the Hope Memorial Bridge, which has several large statues that overlook the bridge, which is called the Guardians of Traffic. The same Twitter account also claims that the players prefer The Guardians over the Spiders.
Still, yet, there are some who think a move to a place with Nashville is pending; even though there hasn’t been any talk of the team moving.
