There was a lot of pressure placed on Mack Wilson as a fifth-round pick. For whatever reason is beyond me, guys are fifth-round picks for a reason and fans need to stop over-valuing them. Wilson struggled out of the gate, which wasn’t surprising. He was a late-round rookie, he was not going to make the same impact as a first-round selection.
He was fine, a sure tackler for most of his first two seasons but he wasn’t always the most effective guy. His coverage skills weren’t up to par and left a lot to be desired from that aspect of his game.
Yet, he persisted and the team kept giving him opportunities. He played significantly fewer snaps in 2021 than he did in either 2019 or 2020 and wasn’t asked to do a lot in obvious passing downs and that seemed to help things.
Mack may still continue to progress as a two-down linebacker, but it seems unlikely that he’ll be an every-down linebacker like he was as a rookie. A “C” is not only fair but it’s better than most fifth-rounders end up getting.
