The Cleveland Browns have made a curious move at quarterback.

The Cleveland Browns have decided that they’re going to be rolling with 12 players on their practice squad for now, while signing former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond to the main roster. To make room for Mond, they’re releasing Isaac Rochell, one of the six defensive ends on the team.

Now the team is down to five and will likely cut one more in the coming days to help make room for other potential players.

Mond, a third-round pick out of Texas A&M, was never known for his accuracy but more for his duel-threat at the position. This seems to be why he replaced Josh Rosen as the third starter, as he’s more in line with the current crop of quarterbacks, as Deshaun Watson and Joshua Dobbs are also known for their duel-threat nature.

Mond may also be a better fit on scout teams as well, as he would ideally be able to simulate playing against guys like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson better than Rosen could. Though he wouldn’t be nearly as powerful as Allen or as nimble as Jackson.

The move is curious as the Vikings had just drafted Mond last season and had already decided he just didn’t have it. So why the Browns would pick him up is a bit perplexing. Either they really put stock in his ability to lead the practice squad or Andrew Berry really doesn’t respect the talent evaluators of Kevin Stefankis’s old team.

Due to Kellen Mond being claimed on waivers, the Browns have to carry him on the 53-man roster, which is, again, peculiar. With so many limited spaces and Kevin Stefanski having a history of only carrying two quarterbacks on the roster, to even acquire Mond on the waiver wire is a head-scratcher.

Mond may be moved to the practice squad eventually, though I’m unsure how that would work within the guidelines of the team. In most leagues, once you claimed someone from the waiver wire, you have to carry them on your roster for a set amount of time.

The Browns weren’t done on Wednesday, however, as they also added 12 players to their practice squad. They can carry up to 16 players, but only 6 can be two+ year pros, while 10 can be guys with two or fewer years of experience in the league. If they want, they could just carry 16 rookies or players with nine games or less of accured service, but that’s not the direction the Browns went.
