3 things the Cleveland Guardians need to work on fixing for 2023
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Guardians wrapped up their 2022 season with a series loss to the New York Yankees
The New York Yankees were the better team in their playoff matchup with the Cleveland Guardians. The Bronx Bullies did their job by winning three out of five games against the Cleveland Guardians and in the process, hammered home some hard truths that this club needs to accept.
The club isn’t about to go on a spending streak, the MLB doesn’t care about small-market teams like that. This isn’t the NBA where teams who lose money get bailed out by the other owners via the impressive revenue-sharing system they have. Nope, every MLB has to turn a profit, otherwise, they risk being moved or shuttered.
So the Guardians are going to have to be creative here in addressing these issues. I believe they can, as they’ve done it in the past under the ownership group. Specifically over the last eight years or so. The idea that this team won’t spend money is a lie, they just won’t spend needlessly.
So here’s hoping some moves can be made to shore up these three glaring issues that the Yankees series exploited.
A home run hitter
We’ve already talked about this in another article, so we’ll keep it short. The failures of Bobby Bradley and Franmil Reyes hurt this team when it mattered most. The Yankees and Guardians were both held to about the same number of hits throughout the series, but the Yankees were able to punish the Guardians with a single swing of the bat, something the Guardians just didn’t have the talent to do. Getting a home run hitter is the number one priority in the offseason. Be it through free agency, a trade, or a call-up.
