Donovan Mitchell, Caris LeVert erupts for 41 apiece to lead Cavs over Celtics
Cleveland Cavaliers march to four straight wins behind Caris LeVert and Donovan Mitchell.
The Cleveland Cavaliers marched into the Boston Celtics’ historic building and stole a 132-123 overtime win against the defending conference titlists. With the gutsy win, the young Cavs move up to 4-1 early in the season following four consecutive victories.
Following a relatively timid offensive outing in their last game against the Orlando Magic, three-time NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell. who already made history with a scoring tear of 100 points through three games to open the season, erupted for a season-high 41.
Matching that impressive scoring output was swingman Caris LeVert, who also added seven assists and three steals in his absolute best game in a wine and gold uniform. He had averaged only 11.5 points in the previous four games.
With Boston being inactive for a couple of days, Cleveland took advantage and jumped the gun in the opening quarter. However, the resilient Celtics wrestled back the lead with a dominant 75-point half.
Self-proclaimed ‘dawgs’, the Cavs refused to back down despite being down by as much as 15, coming right back in the second half and pushed just hard enough to force an extra period where the duo continued to take over to seal the win.
The Cavs duo make history with massive offensive outings
Remember the last time any Cavaliers duo scored 41 points apiece? Yes, that was way back in Game 5 of the historic 2016 NBA Finals run where LeBron James and Kyrie Irving kept Cleveland alive en route to an eventual championship win.
Last season, the Cavs traded for known scorer Caris LeVert to help alleviate the offense for the young team but struggled in only a handful of games. Blame injuries and the lack of opportunity, but with a full offseason and training camp in his pocket, the 28-year-old gunner might finally feel comfortable enough to start living up to the billing.
This offseason, Donovan Mitchell then arrived to raise the ceiling of the team to legitimize their postseason contender status. With those two leading the charge and with the Tower City frontcourt duo of Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley holding fort as nightly double-double threats, Cleveland will remain competitive even with Darius Garland still out with a lacerated eyelid.
The Cleveland Cavaliers will look to continue riding on the other members of the core when the New York Knicks visit on October 30.
