Former Cleveland Guardian Asdrubal Cabrera appears to be trying out combat sports this offseason
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Guardians’ former shortstop, Asdrubal Cabrera appears to be looking at his post-baseball career options.
Asdrubal Cabrera spent nearly eight seasons in Cleveland, hitting home runs, and doubles and being one of the team’s best shortstops of the Eric Wedge and Manny Acta tenures. He earned two All-Star nods as one of the team’s best sluggers. He never seemed like a player that would be down for the count, or would pull his swings.
So it shouldn’t be surprising at all to find out that Cabrera, now a free agent, wasn’t going to pull his swings outside of baseball either.
A bad turn of phrase aside, Cabrera made waves over the weekend after he attacked another player in a Venezuelan winter-league contest. Playing for the Caribes de Anzoategui against the Tiburones de La Guaira, when Tiburones player Carlos Castro hit a home run.
Not happy that Castro flipped his bad and starred down the Caribes dugout, Cabrera approached Castor mid-home-run trot and proceeded to blast Castro with a huge shot. Cabrera would hit a clothesline that Stan Hansen himself would be proud of, knocking Castro down and seemingly out for a brief moment, before both teams filed onto the field for a brawl.
Asdrubal Cabrera’s reputation should take a hit
The once-great Cleveland Guardians’ shortstop, Cabrera has found himself now a struggling free agent with a nasty moment on his resume. He didn’t play in the Majors at all in 2022, and it’s unlikely he gets a second chance. He’s the perfect type of bench player for a team like his old club, but with his reputation now becoming a bit more problematic than you’d like, it’s unlikely he’d get the call.
Even though he could still be a solid bat. The problem is that the less productive you become, the least likely anyone will put up with the unpredictability that Cabrera possesses.
Still, if the Guardians brought him on to round out the bench, that’d be a very interesting situation, especially since Cabrera is hitting .330 over his last two seasons down there.
