3 Free Agents The Browns Should Sign to Win the Super Bowl
Daron Payne, Defensive Tackle
Despite Myles Garrett’s outsized presence on the defensive line, Cleveland’s pass rush really struggled this season. The Browns ranked 29th in the NFL with just 30 sacks, so upgrading the interior should be at the top of the priority list.
Enter Payne, who notched a career-high 11.5 sacks for the Commanders last season while wreaking havoc in the trenches. He would instantly shore up Cleveland’s defensive line while forming one of the NFL’s most formidable pass-rushing duos with Garrett.
If Washington doesn’t use the franchise tag on him, Payne should be general manager Andrew Barry’s top target.
Mecole Hardman, Wide Receiver
The Chiefs are likely to move on from the speedy former second-round pick, and this marriage makes too much sense not to happen. Deshaun Watson needs speedy weapons to round out his playmaking options, and Hardman is one of the league’s premier gadget players.
Hardman excelled at jet sweeps and quick slants with the Chiefs. That kind of skillset would pair perfectly with Amari Cooper’s precision route-running and Donovan Peoples-Jones’ deep threat.
Perhaps the best part is that Hardman likely won’t cost much after spending much of this season on the sidelines nursing an injury. Expect Cleveland to target the two-time Super Bowl champion on a prove-it deal to inject some big-play ability into the offense.
T.J. Edwards, Linebacker
Philadelphia voided Edwards’ contract despite him leading the team with 158 tackles this season. They may still bring him back, but Cleveland should be doing its best to pry the talented linebacker away.
The Browns’ defense needs help at every level, and Edwards would bring a tough attitude to the middle of the field. In addition to Garrett on the line and Denzel Ward in the secondary, securing Edwards would give Cleveland a star at every level of the defense.
It might be pricey as the former undrafted rookie looks to secure his first massive contract, but these are the moves you need to make to become true Super Bowl contenders.
