Cleveland Guardians are hyping up the next great brother duo
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Guardians are quietly hyping up the best brother duo since the Alomars.
The Cleveland Guardians are soon going to have two, full-time, major-league brothers playing every day with one another in Josh and Bo Naylor. They’ll be the first siblings to play ball together in Cleveland since Roberto and Sandy Alomar. The brothers Alomar played two seasons together in 1999 and 2000 before Sandy would end up with the Chicago White Sox.
While Bo Naylor tasted some action in 2022 as a September callup, he and Josh Naylor didn’t share any significant time together, something that’ll change in a matter of months at the rate things is going. While Bo isn’t ready to be called up just yet, he may be ready by the end of the season or by 2024.
That would put them in some unique company. While it’s not uncommon for brothers to both play in the majors at the same time, it’s rare that they play on the same team together. Aaron Boone and Brett Boone did so in Cinncinannti for about two seasons in the late 90s.
Former Guardians outfielder Brian Giles played a year with his baby brother and former Atlanta Braves second basemen Marcus Giles. They hooked up in 2007 with the 89-win San Diego Padres, their hometown team.
Two of the three Molina brothers, Jose and Bengie, were catchers on the same Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim team in the early to mid-200s. Justin and B.J. Upton got together in Atlanta for two seasons as well. Next up appears to be the Naylors.
Josh Naylor and his little brother Bo Naylor could very easily be the core of the Cleveland Guardians’ future
While we mentioned some of the brothers who played together, Guardians fans will most remember the Alomar brothers, the catcher and second-basemen combo who took the league by storm in the 90s.
Robbie was the MVP second-basemen, while Sandy was the most unheralded game-caller in franchise history, while also earning honors in the league as well. While Josh isn’t on Robbie’s level as a hitter or defender, he’s got power that can’t be denied. Bo, however, may be closer to Sandy as a player than many think. They have similar styles at the plate and behind it, both call excellent games.
The two will look to give the Guardians some long-term stability. Especially with Josh regaining mobility again. His power isn’t his only asset, it’s his versatility, and with his movement being better now than it was when he came back in 2022, he may just carve out a long run with the Guards, just like his baby brother.
The only question we have is when is this going to come to fruition? It could be this year, could be next, but many experts don’t think we’ll have to wait that long. The Naylors are set up to be very impressive players for a very long time with Cleveland, and we can’t wait to see what kind of memories they can make on the corner of Carnegie and Ontario.
