The Cleveland Browns want explosive receiver, could this be how Nick Chubb’s tenure ends?

The Cleveland Browns are trying to spread out their offense and that could spell the end of Nick Chubb.

It’s blasphemous to even consider getting rid of Nick Chubb. He’s the Browns’ best pure talent at the running back position ever. He’s the guy that’s been making this offense go year in and year out without fail. Yet there are some who believe he’s on the chopping block simply due to his contract. Ridding the Browns of his contract would free up a chunk of money that the team needs.

While some will wrongly claim the salary cap isn’t real, guys get cut, or have their deals reworked to help the club every year. This means that every year the team has to make hard choices. With the recent word from Matthew Berry about the Browns revolving around upgrading the receiver position, this may be the first step in Chubb’s exit from the club.

Here’s what Berry had to say;

"Cleveland’s offense is going to be really interesting next year. Look for the Browns to add a speed wide receiver this off-season to go with Amari Cooper. One source told me “They are really going to open up the offense. Go five wide. Pass a lot. This is going to be Deshaun Watson’s offense, not Nick Chubb’s. They will pass a lot more than folks expect.”"

Berry would later highlight how the team has already moved away from Chubb;

"I was told to go look at the Browns-Steelers game from Week 18. In that game, the opening kickoff temperature was in the 30’s. Cold as hell and the Over/Under was 39.5. People expected a low scoring, cold weather, typical AFC North game. Instead, even as cold and windy as the conditions were, Cleveland threw it 29 times while Nick Chubb ran it 12 times in a 28-14 loss for the Browns. Yes, they were down, but my source said that will be much closer to the norm for Cleveland next year. Tons of passing attempts for Watson (likely closer to 40 a game in reasonable weather) with like 12 rushing attempts for Chubb and maybe a few touches for Jerome Ford."

No one wants to lose Nick Chubb but the cap must have its sacrifices

When reading tweets from people like 92.3’s Ken Carman, the general idea is that he believes fans want Chubb to get traded. That’s not the case. That’s simply not the case. The Browns are the ones pushing for his trade and they’re doing it by constantly underutilizing him on the field.

Then by changing up the entire offense. It’s very evident to anyone paying attention that the Browns are getting ready to field offers for Chubb. The Browns are not going to use him enough, allegedly, in the upcoming season to justify paying him what he’s worth. So if you’re not going to use him constantly, then why bother keeping him around?

The Browns clearly want a true number-one option at receiver, a guy who can take over the game completely, and also allow the Browns to move on from Amari Cooper after his deal expires (or sign him to a substantially cheaper deal). If moving Chubb helps the Browns land that guy, then they’re going to do it.

They don’t care if the fans love Chubb, why would they? They’ve shown for decades that they don’t really care about the fans. So why wouldn’t they trade Chubb if they believed it’d help them be in a better position tomorrow than they were yesterday?
