Joshua Dobbs could be the perfect backup quarterback for the Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns have brought back Joshua Dobbs and it’s the right move.
The Cleveland Browns have brought back Joshua Dobbs to serve as the backup quarterback for Deshaun Watson. He signed a one-year, $2 million fully guaranteed contract to return to the team. Dobbs spent most of 2022 with the Browns as the backup to Jacoby Brissett, before being released by the team after Watson returned from suspension.
He would later be picked up by the Tennessee Titans, where he started two games, and had modest success. He threw for 411 yards, with two touchdowns, two interceptions, and a completion rate of 58%.
His first game was largely a one-man effort, with no running game or receivers to speak of. It showed he completed just 51% of passes. His second start saw the return of Derrick Henry, and in turn, saw his completion percentage raise to 69%. During his short stint in Tennesse, his best pass-catchers were a declining receiver Robert Woods and former Browns tight end, Austin Hooper.
Dobbs, with this Browns offense, would be much more effective.
Joshua Dobbs is the perfect fit for the Cleveland Browns
Dobbs looked great for the Browns in the preseason, and while everyone knew he’d only see time if there were injuries to Watson and Brissett, fans were hoping to see more of him. His play in Tennessee gave fans a glimpse of what was possible, and due to that, fans now have some faith that Dobbs can succeed in Cleveland.
His mobility and intelligence are his greatest assets. He doesn’t have a huge arm, but he’s clever enough to know when to move the pocket, and self-aware enough to know if he can make certain passes.
While other quarterbacks like Brian Hoyer and Teddy Bridgewater would’ve made fine backups, Dobbs just has a unique x-factor that’s hard to deny. His play style could be described as courageous, as he’s willing to try and win you games, without necessarily putting you in harm’s way. He’s a far better playmaker than say, Brissett, but he’s also far less reliable as well.
That said, Dobbs will make for a fine backup, especially considering that Kellen Mond isn’t someone the Browns should lean on.
