NBA trade idea sees Cleveland Cavaliers trading Jarrett Allen to the Dallas Mavericks
By Chad Porto
A new trade suggestion sees the Cleveland Cavaliers trade Jarrett Allen to the Dallas Mavericks.
Can we stop with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Jarrett Allen Trades? They’re all so terrible. Allen is an All-Star, a top defender in the NBA, and one of the best young players in the game, yet every time we see him get suggested in trade packages, it’s for spare parts and bad draft picks.
Seriously, what is going on with you people? If you’re trading Allen, it’s for an All-Star caliber player or a Top 5 NBA Draft pick, nothing less than that. If the Jazz got a haul for Rudy Gobert, then the Cavs can at least get a bundle for Allen.
Cue NBA Analysis for the latest, and worst, entry into the “Dumb Jarrett Allen Trades” contest. This week’s contest involves the Dallas Mavericks. Let’s see what this trade has to offer.
The worst trade that the Cleveland Cavaliers could make but not for the reason you think
Gun to my head, this isn’t the worst value for Allen. A Top 10 pick is nothing to shake a stick at. Yet, it’s also the worst pick in the world, for one big reason; this is a rebuilding move. This is the trade you make when you’re rebuilding the team. I absolutely think that Allen is worth a starting small forward of Hardaway’s caliber and a Top 10 NBA Draft Pick.
But this trade isn’t going to make the Cavs better, at least not good enough to compete for an NBA title. Hardaway is a borderline starting small forward at best, with just two years left on his contract. He’s barely an improvement over Isaac Okoro as an all-around NBA player and is probably a step down from Caris LeVert.
Plus, you don’t know what that 10th pick will turn into. They may be the guy who leads the team to 10 straight NBA Championships, or more likely, they’re a bust who rides the bench for their career.
If the Cavs aren’t happy with their makeup and want to blow this thing up, then yes, trading Allen to the Mavericks for this package is fair compensation. But if you’re trying to get better, this trade does the opposite.
