The Cleveland Browns’ “dawg logo” is the best it could be

The Cleveland Browns unveiled their newest logo and it’s…fine.
The Cleveland Browns have been a team of people for a long time. They’re the type of team that lets them enjoy things like playoff appearances, winning seasons, or years where there are no controversies. Instead, they’re the type of team that will forgo hiring an expert on marketing and instead give fans free tickets for doing very expensive work for free.
That’s right, the Browns are using fan labor to design their newest “Dawg Logo”. We’ve been covering the voting since it was announced and while it’s a bit shady to call on fans to demand something be done that usually costs thousands of dollars, a lot of people turned out for it.
And admittedly, some of the free-labor designs were good. Maybe they’re not so good you can start a franchise from scratch and use one of them, levels of good. They are good enough, however, that you can use them for a season.
Like with last year’s Brownie the Elf competition, the Browns wanted the fans do design their new “Dawg Logo” and like with the Brownie the Elf competition, the “Dawg Logo” design was revealed to a lot of “meh”.

The Cleveland Browns’ new logo leaves much to be desired
The new logo isn’t bad by any means, but it’s also pretty on-brand. This is the type of logo you get after you ask the design team “We want to modernize our look, but not change anything”. Yes, this is technically different than the logos used in the past but not so much that it feels exciting.
It feels like the team went with the safest option.
This logo looks like the cousin of the one used from 2002 to 2014. There are changes, the stripe is new, the lack of irises is a choice and the collar was a nice touch but it doesn’t feel like the Browns were looking for bold, they were just looking for slightly different.
And why call on the fans when any public image firm in the country would have suggested this exact thing?
