Cleveland Indians: Review Of Team And Reaction To Articles

So far the Cleveland Indians have been disappointing, which is far from what was expected by Sports Illustrated, the team’s management, and the fans in NE Ohio! Their offense is anemic at best and is so inconsistent that they make ordinary pitchers look like MLB greats Lefty Grove or Sandy Koufax.

Yesterday Zack Meisel of the Northeast Media Group had an article published about the Indians not needing any right-handed power bats. I disagree. Right now they could use any power bat, as there is a serious power shortage on this team. Not to mention the fact they are really bad with hitting with runners in scoring position.

What would Corey Kluber‘s record look like with even average run support? Also, can you believe how bad the bullpen has been? They have had all kinds of problems holding games, let alone getting saves or wins.

The Akron Beacon Journal also published a recent article that is sure to get some opinions. The article is the first in a series with Indians president Mark Shapiro answering questions about the team. Shapiro believes they are happy with the players they have and that the team may not make any trades by the deadline, leading to them staying pat. This team has a good nucleus but it needs help on offense and possibly defense. You could live with the defense but not the serious lack of offense and the power shortage they have had.

There has been no speed shown on this team. If you do not have power then you must have speed. Teams cannot play one base at a time without power. It is one or the other. Francisco Lindor in 26 games has only one stolen base! What are they paying Michael Bourn for? It cannot be for his hitting and certainly not his lack of speed on the bases! Talk about a player who is overpaid. Speaking of overpaid players, I will not even go into Nick Swisher‘s performance.

Staying stagnant at the trade deadline screams to me that this front office and the owners do not really care about this team or you the fans. They have some of the best pitching this team has had in years. With a core group of youth who are really set to go and take the next step, the team cannot make the next jump in competition without some help, which evidently isn’t coming!

The front office will say they believe in the players they have and do not really want to give up anything that is tradeable. However, they have no one in the system to bring up to fill the holes in this team. If there were, those players would already be in the major leagues! They did not want to bring Lindor up this early, but Cleveland had no choice. The cupboard is bare.

They are in essence wasting the core and the good pitching because they are not spending and/or trading for what is needed to improve this team into more of a contender and then some.
