Cleveland Cavaliers: Cunningham Will Be On Team’s Roster

The NBA season starts in just a few days. After multiple preseason games, the decision has been made and now the Cleveland Cavaliers have filled out their opening night roster.

After an offseason of intrigue on who will be added to the already very talented Cleveland Cavaliers roster, the team has decided to add G Jared Cunningham for the last spot. This decision means that G Quinn Cook has not made the team.

Even though Cunningham has a non-guaranteed contract and will be earning less than one million this season, his overall cost to the team with the luxury tax is multiple millions of dollars.

Cunningham is a 6’4 guard. If he sees playing time it will be because of injuries at SG and/or PG or Cleveland has destroyed a team and he is playing in garbage time.

It is smart to keep another guard on the roster because of the injuries the Cavs’ guards are already dealing with and also are coming back from. Yet, was Cunningham really the best choice? For now it sure looks like it is.

Given how both Cunningham and Cook played this preseason showed that the team could not lose in this decision. Cunningham deserves this opportunity. However, after watching Cook for four years at Duke University and looking at his play in the preseason, I would have actually went with Cook.

What if the team decided to keep both of them? If they did that, they would have had to release someone already on the roster. G Matthew Dellavedova is a player I would have been okay seeing replaced.

He is a third string guard, who only had a handful of good games in his career, with the majority of them in last season’s playoffs.

Cook is one of those players who had plenty of success in college, while winning many games in multiple roles. It would be a shame to see Cook not be in the Cavs organization somehow. Now that the team has made their decision, hopefully Cook is willing to play for Cleveland’s minor league team, the Canton Charge of the NBA Developmental League.

Despite not making Cleveland’s roster, that does not mean Cook will not be the team’s roster one day, especially if he makes it on Canton’s roster.

Now that PF Tristan Thompson is back on the team’s roster with his recent extension and Cunningham being the 15th man, the next thing for fans to get excited for is Cleveland’s opening night game against the Chicago Bulls. NBA regular season is almost here!

Cleveland has the players, experience, and the drive to get back to the NBA Finals. This is definitely an exciting time for Cavaliers fans and the organization.

Should the Cavs have went with Quinn instead?
