In Cavs trade talk, the team doesn’t want to move Kevin Love for Carmelo Anthony? So, what should Cleveland trade to get Melo?

Just because the Cavs said no to Knicks’ offer, which would’ve swapped Kevin Love for Carmelo Anthony, doesn’t mean we’ve heard the last rumor surrounding the New York forward.

“We have not heard the last of Carmelo Anthony involving the Cavs, either,” ESPN scribe Brian Windhorst said on ESPN Cleveland 850 AM Wednesday afternoon.

The Cavs aren’t interested in giving up Love, so what kind of trade would GM David Griffin have to make if he actually wants to add Melo to the roster.

“From a Cavs perspective, you can’t touch our Big 3. if you can bring us a trade package that involves anything but the Big 3. And I don’t like to speculate because I don’t know what the Knicks have offered,” Windhorst said.

Windy stressed multiple times that he was only speculating about what may happen in the future.

The Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary alum talked about the position the Knicks are in. He believes if a trade’s going to happen, New York is the team that must do all the leg work.

“The Cavs position on this is we’re not going to sit here and work hard on this,” Windy said. “It’s up to the Knicks to see what they can do and it’s obvious that if they are even going to get the Cavs to answer the phone on Kevin Love, they’re going to have to add some sweetness to the pot.”

What if the Knicks still want love?

“I’m not picking up the phone on a Kevin Love call unless it’s Carmelo Anthony, plus. Plus a first-round draft pick. Plus a first round draft pick, including Willy Hernangomez, their young big man, plus Kevin Love and two first-round draft picks.”

If the Cavs are somehow able to swing a deal for Melo without trading love, how would they do it?

Former Factory of Sadness editor Jared Mueller, who now writes for the Wine And Gold report, posted an interesting tweet.

I ran this trade through the RealGM trade checker, adding Hernangomez to the mix for the Cavs, and the trade was rejected because it did not adhere to the collective bargaining agreement.

Remember, in the NBA, you’ve got to make the money match (or come close to it.) If you want to try you luck at making this deal work, here’s the link for the trade checker.

But you get the idea. To acquire Melo without moving Love would take something crazy.

And as Windhorst stated, the Knicks, who now seem desperate to move on from Melo, would have to be the ones to do the leg work.
