When can the Cleveland Browns trade for Jimmy Garoppolo? March 9 at the earliest.

Will the Cleveland Browns make a trade for a quarterback, sign one in free agency, or wait for the NFL draft?

Browns fans could get some clarity on that answer in a little over a month’s time. The NFL begins its new year March 9, and trades can commence. If the Browns are to make a trade for Garoppolo, the front office will likely want to get him under their control as soon as possible.

An interesting note: Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown are due their respective roster bonuses of $750,000 March 11. If the Browns want Garoppolo, it’s unlikely they’ll want to pay a bonus to one of the quarterbacks already on their roster.

If you really want to target a date, look for something between March 9-11.

What will it cost for Garopplo. We’ve heard various rumors and reports.

Some contend it will take a first- and fourth-rounder, which is what it cost the Vikings to acquire Sam Bradford from the Eagles.

However, because the Browns pick higher, “an agent who agreed with that asking price from New England’s perspective thought taking two 2017 second-rounders and a 2018 conditional third from Cleveland would be a rough equivalent if the Browns were interested,” according to ESPN writer Mike Sando.

That means the Browns would fork over the No. 33 overall pick, in addition to the No. 51 overall selection, which was acquired from a trade with the Titans.

Will the Patriots actually move Jimmy G? It certainly seems so.

First of all, Tom Brady, 39, still wants to play.

“If it was up to my wife she would have me retire today,” Brady said. “She told me that last night three times. And I said, ‘Too bad, babe, I’m having too much fun right now.’ You know, I feel like I can still do it and if you love what you do and you’re capable of doing it then, I mean I’d be so bored if I wasn’t going out there, knowing that I could still do it. So I’m going to work hard to be ready to go and I still plan on playing for a long time,” Brady said via Pro Football Talk.

The Pats then must consider Garoppolo, versus 2016 third-rounder Jacoby Brissett.

Brissett is far from being a weekly starter, but his selection probably secured Garoppolo’s eventual trade. Bill Belichik didn’t burn a third-round pick on a quarterback only so he could sign his current backup to a long-term deal. Long story, short: It’s not the Patriot way.

Garoppolo’s addition would allow the Browns to focus on other positions in the 2017 draft. Myles Garrett is still the mock draft’s world consensus No. 1 pick, while Mentor native Mitch Trubisky has been going to the 49ers at No. 2.
