2. Offensive Line: Where Was The Improvement?

Coming into this season, the Browns offensive line was ranked in the top five in all of the NFL. It didn’t perform as such on Sunday. The “protection” didn’t lead to the unfortunate concussion of Josh McCown, but it did contribute to only 42 yards combined by Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson. The Jets defensive line and linebackers were relentless and the Browns looked over-matched all game.

It also didn’t help that they had 12 penalties for a total of 109 yards along with five turnovers.

Leonard Williams looked like a 10-year vet the way he made the left side of the line look silly–especially Joel Bitonio. They had no answer for the rookie, and he was causing havoc on Johnny Manziel all game long. Besides the touchdown to Travis Benjamin and the long scramble he had, Manziel didn’t have many chances to complete plays. He fumbled twice due to constant pressure and didn’t get much help from the receivers or tight ends.

I’m not sure if the line was surprised by the defense of the Jets, but they clearly weren’t prepared for their attack. The suspension of coach Andy Moeller could of potentially been a distraction leading into the game, however, it shouldn’t of led to the whole line struggling as it did. The Titans will have a slightly better defensive attack than the Jets did. The line must have a better plan coming into the game or we might be seeing Brian Hartline as the emergency quarterback after all.
