Time To Blow It Up…Again!

From top to bottom, the Cleveland Browns need to start over. I don’t mean changing the GM and head coach, I mean a complete cleansing of the people that make football decisions for the Browns. That means first releasing the entire scouting department and firing Farmer. The two drafts since Farmer took over the reigns of the franchise are a disaster. The drafts before him weren’t much better, either.

The next step for the Browns will be hiring an experienced general manager or long tenured assistant GM to lead the re-vamped scouting department. While it seems like the two sides might contradict, I’d like a little old-school thinking mixed with a new-school train of thought.

Some teams I’d like to see the Browns pull from might be Green Bay, Carolina, Minnesota, or Arizona. I think both analytical scouting and traditional scouting are needed these days in a front office. Then that General Manager should get to pick the Head Coach that they want to work with.

Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine were forced together due to the abrupt decision by Jimmy Haslam to dump the former front office tandem of Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi. The tension between the GM and the head coach can be felt week to week, and even Pettine made reference to discord in the front office.

Pettine rarely plays the players that Farmer has brought in. Whether it was through the draft or through free agency. Players such as Bowe, Manziel, and Gilbert find themselves on the bench week after week, despite the subpar season. It’s not a formula for success, so I’m hoping the next regime will be on the same page.
