Cavaliers Receive:

Markieff Morris
PJ Tucker

Suns Receive:

Timofey Mozgov
Joe Harris

Why it should be considered:

With all the turmoil in the Suns’ organization, Phoenix could be looking to cut their losses and start over very soon. There have been suggestions the Cavaliers call the Suns about newly-signed Tyson Chandler in the wake of Mozgov’s struggles this season, but if the Cavaliers do, in fact, look to play smaller, they should consider this trade, instead.

If Phoenix is looking at a fire sale in the near future, Morris is going to be one of the first to go. Morris has expressed his displeasure with the Suns organization since his twin brother Marcus was traded to the Detroit Pistons last summer. He is under contract for the next four seasons at an $8 million per year clip, so getting his contract off the board would be good for the Suns’ potential rebuilding project and good for the Cavaliers, who are looking for some continuity in the organization.

At 6-foot-10, 250 pounds, Morris is a power forward, but has the athleticism to compete with smaller power forwards, such as Draymond Green, while still allowing LeBron James to play the small forward position.

P.J. Tucker, a 6-6, 245-pound small forward would also come to the Cavaliers in this deal. Tucker is a career 7.0 point per game scorer, but shoots relatively well from 3-point range at nearly 36 percent. Tucker’s addition would simply add to the Cavaliers’ depth with small lineups.

With this trade, the Suns would get roughly $13 million off their books for next season.

There are other ways a deal with the Suns could get done. Technically, the Cavaliers could acquire Markieff Morris for only a trade exception, but assuming there will be other suitors for Morris, such a scenario is not likely. Additionally, Mozgov and PJ Tucker could be omitted altogether. There are many combinations that would work, and much of it depends on whether the Suns are simply looking to start over or whether they are looking for higher returns.

A trade with Phoenix may prove to be the Cavaliers’ best bet, as it will likely allow them to keep Kevin Love while still obtaining tools to play small and compete with teams like the Warriors. At any rate, the Suns are definitely a team to keep an eye on in the coming weeks for Cavalier fans.
