Is The Right Question Even Asked?

Joe Russo

I wonder if we are asking the wrong question. Sure, we all want the Dolans to spend more money and to put more resources into the payroll. However, it is not as if the Dolans have been bad owners.

Progressive Field is beautiful and the family paid for all of the latest renovations with their own money, unlike their counterparts across town in Browns and Orange. They may not be major players in free agency, but they have shown a willingness to invest in young players and extend contracts early to keep core pieces in place.

The Dolans have helped develop a reputation for the Cleveland Indians as one of the best run businesses in all of baseball. As for the on-field product, the Indians are competitive.

Heck, I wrote a piece right before the year started about all of the reasons we should be better Indians fans and many of those reasons start with the Dolans. Cheaper seats, better fan experiences, far better work in social media and traditional media are just some of the reasons.

The Indians have this whole “for the fans” thing figured out. It is on us to be better fans and go to games. The Dolans have done what they can with one of the best rosters in the A.L. and one of the best stadiums in America. It’s ticket revenue that helps fuel the payroll.

So do I think the Dolans can do more, sure. Do they need to? I don’t think so. Remember, it’s not the Dolans that blew nearly every first round draft pick over the last 15 years. Those are choices made by GMs and scouts, most of which were booted out of town.
