Center: Cameron Erving, John Greco, Mike Matthews*

Cam Erving will open the season at center, and Browns fans should expect to see more from the Stanford product after a disappointing rookie campaign.

The former coaching staff tried to use Erving at every line position, instead of the one he won a national championship with at Florida State at: Center.

The Browns hope with Erving focusing on center, and that position alone, he’ll be able to justify his standing a first-round pick.

Even before Erving took the field as a rookie, ESPN Cleveland writer Tony Grossi perfectly summed up how the coaching staff was using the first-year lineman: “A jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none.”

Should Erving falter, the Browns will probably shake up their line to adjust accordingly.

John Greco would be my No. 1 choice to sub in for Erving, but I’m also not overlooking rookie Mike Matthews. The undrafted rookie out of Texas A&M has Hall of Fame bloodlines (son of Bruce Matthews), but he’s undersized. It’s more likely Matthews starts on the practice squad because the Browns would need someone capable of stepping in, and not missing a beat should Erving get injured, or not produce.
