Norris Cole, Chinese Basketball Association

The Cavaliers front office and Norris Cole expressed mutual interest, but Cleveland couldn’t offer the Cleveland State product anything more than the veteran minimum.

In an effort to maximize his salary potential, Cole signed a $5 million contract in China. The Chinese season ends in February and the playoffs run through late March. The contract he signs allows him to return to the NBA when the Chinese season is over. That’s right around the time the Cavs should be ramping up their playoff push.

Cole could be useful to a good team. He still possesses a quick first step, although his defense leaves a lot to be desired.

But as Cavs fans saw last year during the NBA Finals, sometimes you don’t need shutdown defense from your backup point guard. Remember, Mo Williams took time away from Delly in the Finals, and sparked more than a few offensive possessions with his ability to score the ball.
