A Draft Pick

The initial response to the Osweiler trade was that the Browns were going full-blown NBA, buying a draft pick by accepting another team’s salary dump.

The future may say otherwise, but it’s hard to argue against this train of thought.

The Browns front office is analytically oriented. Nothing sings “analytics” more than this trade, in which the Browns picked up a second-round selection .

ESPN’s Dan Graziano wrote:

"The deal looks weird to the football establishment, but that’s the point of the Browns right now. The people running the franchise are not of the football establishment. They’re trying to find a new way to do things, since the ways the Browns have done things for years haven’t worked. They have baseball people, analytics people, all kinds of different voices in there, and they’re trying to figure out a way to build the league’s worst franchise into something sustainably good. At the moment, the plan involves overspending. But they have the money, so why not?"

The Browns, now find themselves loaded for the 2017 and 2018 drafts. The addition of the second rounder acquired with Osweiler means Cleveland will have 10 selections throughout the first and second rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft, as well as the 2018 draft.

Perhaps the draft pick helps harvest Jimmy Garoppolo, maybe it doesn’t. Either way the Browns have an asset that is attractive other teams.
