A Bridge Quarterback

Hue Jackson may like Brock Osweiler enough to kick the tires on him in 2017.

As Osweiler approached free agency in 2016, there was speculation that Hue Jackson may make a play for Osweiler, who was then backing up Peyton Manning as the Deven Broncos won the Super Bowl title.

The Browns name got thrown into the Osweiler ring by one scribe,  and if you’re recall, this wasn’t some far off corner of the blogosphere that connected Jackson to Osweiler,. It was none other than The MMQB Founder Peter King.

King wrote at the time:

"“I think one little bit of free-agency buzz I heard here is the Broncos won’t be surprised if Browns coach Hue Jackson does more than just sniff around Brock Osweiler. Cleveland is in an interesting spot, picking second in the first round with a cadre of interesting but not lock college quarterbacks on the board. They’re surely not prepared to know what they’ll do a month from now in free-agency, but if Jackson is shaky on Jared Goff and Paxton Lynch and Carson Wentz, maybe Cleveland will look at a reasonably priced (or so you would think) prospect like Osweiler. “"

OK, so King was wrong about Brock being reasonably priced, but now Hue and Brock are under contract with the same team, and Jackson has a great track record of developing quarterbacks he’s been handed.

If Osweiler is still on the Browns by draft day, it’s a good bet that he’ll be the bridge quarterback for the Browns quarterback of the future, because the way the draft is shaping up, the Browns may have their pick of the top three signal callers in the draft.

When you consider Mike Glennon is getting $15 million from the Bears to be a bridge quarterback, it doesn’t look so crazy for the Browns to be paying Osweiler.
