Raekwon McMillan, MLB, Chiefs Round 1, Pick No. 27

The combine probably elevated Raekwon McMillan from a high second-round pick to a first-round selection.

Bucknuts’ Patrick Murphy analyzed how the combine helped the junior linebacker.

"The player that may have helped himself the most though is Raekwon McMillan. The linebacker ran a faster-than-expected 4.61 40-yard dash, third best among his position group, and was also a top performer in the 60-yard shuttle and the three-cone drill. In addition to those impressive numbers, McMillan did 23 reps on the 225-pound bench press, had a 33-inch vertical and broad jumped more than 10 feet."

So why Kansas City? The Chiefs have an aging middle linebacker in Derrick Johnson, who’s 34 and recovering from his second Achilles injury. He’s already reworked his contract for this season, and he’s on the books for $8 million in 2018, although there’s no guarantee he’ll be around to collect.

McMillan could get reps, while adjusting to the NFL game. The former five-star recruit is already an elite tackler and should help stop the run, but he came off the field a lot on third down last season. Having Johnson in the fold, at least for this season, will afford McMillan a little time to improve this part of his game.
