Ohio State football: 5 reasons the Buckeyes will beat Army
By Alec Hartman
1. The Buckeyes will find their rhythm in the run game.
Getting the rushing attack on track is essential for the Buckeyes’ success. After doing it so well during week one, the Bucks relapsed on their previous issues of shying away from the run game in big games. A plan to get back on track again this week to cement a consistent run game would be a good start on their way to recovery.
The struggle to run the ball consistently and effectively against Oklahoma last Saturday was both confusing and infuriating. The Bucks have Mike Weber who was a thousand yard rusher returning from last season and J.K. Dobbins who just broke the school record in debut rushing yards. With all things considered, the Bucks still managed muddle it all up.
J.T. Barrett ran the ball more than Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins combined. When this happens, typically the outcome is not a good one. The Bucks were supposed to dictate the pace of the game and use their superior rushing attack to fend off the Sooners. Instead, Barrett ended up with the ball in his hands three times as much as he should have and none of the running backs got into rhythm.
The key for this game would be to establish a consistent run game. Weber’s return from injury should have made the Bucks’ offense more dynamic. Instead, it may end up causing more confusion. The Bucks will have to figure out how to effectively distribute carries between Dobbins and Weber. Against Oklahoma, Dobbins recorded 14 touches compared to Weber’s five. That touch count is far too low as these incredibly talented backs should be getting the ball at least 15 times each in the Bucks’ offensive scheme.
It is unclear whether Dobbins will be used as a receiver out of the backfield or not as he only has three receptions through two games. This means that Weber and Dobbins will form a running back by committee which can be effective in breaking opponents down.
Establishing the run game early will open up the passing game for Barrett who is in need of a confidence booster. Army will be hard pressed to contain the Buckeyes’ dynamic duo on the ground. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Bucks unleash Weber and Dobbins to their fullest extent on Saturday considering their misuse last weekend.
