Brook Jacoby, 3B

A mustache wasn’t a part of Brook Jacoby‘s long baseball career, but it was present in the early going for the man handling the hot corner at Cleveland Municipal Stadium.

Jacoby was solid player for the Tribe, earning two All-Star nods in 1986 and 1990.

His best season came in 1987, when he hit .300 (.928 OPS) and cranked 32 homers.

That ’87 club was picked by Sports Illustrated to win the World Series, and of course, it flamed out spectacularly.

You can see why SI liked the Tribe. The club had offensive talent with players such as Jacoby, Corey Snyder and Joe Carter, but the pitching staff…yikes. It’s like the writers and editors at SI forgot there was another facet to the game.

The rotation relied heavily on two knuckleballers. Tom Candiotti went 7-18 that year, while 97-year-old Phil Neikro went 7-11.

Steve Carlton, who was at the end of his career, went 5-9.

Jacoby is stil active in MLB. He spent seven years as a hitting coach with the Cincinnati Reds before moving on to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Its’ fitting Jacoby landed with the Reds for a while, as the franchise and the city of Cincinnati marketed its entire All-Star Game berth around mustaches.
