Doug Jones, closer

Doug Jones‘ mustache screamed, “Closer’s aren’t fashionable yet, but I’m going to do it anyways, and be very good at it.”

Good players on the Indians were such a rare thing in the late 1980s and early 1990s, that Jones stands out.

For some lowly Indians teams, Jones posted save totals of 37, 42 and 42 between 1988-1990, and this is before closers became something each manager had ready to unleash in the ninth inning.

Jones’ 129 saves with the Indians are second most in franchise history.

After early success with the Tribe, Jones moved on, pitching for Baltimore, Houston, Philadelphia, the Cubs and the Brewers before finally returning to Cleveland in 1998 to help out the AL Central division winning Tribe.

By the end of his careers, “closers” had become a thing, with the likes of Mariano Rivera dominating the last inning.

But fear not, Mr. Jones. Your efforts, just like your mustache, will never be forgotten.
