Carmen Castillo, OF

Carmen Castillo’s glorious mustache made one thing known to fans: The man under the ‘stache may not have the best stats, but there was no way the 10 people at Municipal Stadium weren’t going to doubt that his facial hair was Major League caliber.

Castillo played parts of 10 seasons in the big leagues, with his best season coming as a member of the Cleveland Indians.

In 1984, he cracked 10 homers while batting .261 while driving in 36 runs. He appeared in 87 games for the Tribe that season, amassing 236 plate appearances.

And then there was the mustache.

I was a 6-year-old boy sitting in the stands waiving to Castillo. That ‘stache. Those flip-down sunglasses. I didn’t know how bad his stats were, but I did know this: The guy was born to play professional baseball the 1980s.

One of the greatest thrills of my childhood attending games at Municipal Stadium was waiving to Castillo, and receiving a wave back.

Hey, there 2,000 people in the stands and it was Indians couldn’t be a Little League team. Why not make some friends while your there?

Castillo spent his last few seasons playing for the Minnesota Twins. He died in 2015 due to heart problems.

While Castillo won’t go down in history as one of the Tribe’s most memorable players, his Hall of Fame mustache will always live on.
