4. Jim Schwartz

When Jackson was hired, he needed to fill in his coaching staff. Well, he could have gone with current Eagles’ defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Had Jackson done that, it wouldn’t have been Schwartz’s first time working for the Browns as he was also a scout from 1993-1995.

Schwartz was contacted by the Browns as ESPN reported, but instead the team chose Ray Horton. We all know how that worked out. Had Cleveland gone with Schwartz maybe the Browns wouldn’t be as bad as they are.

He is one of the best coordinators in the game but has failed to land many head coaching opportunities. Schwartz was the Detroit Lions’ head coach from 2009-2013. Since then, he worked for the Buffalo Bills and the NFL prior to landing his current gig.

According to NFL.com, Schwartz’s Eagles defense was the fourth best defense in the NFL at 306.5 yards/game in 2017. Now Schwartz isn’t one of the top options available based on his head coaching career.

Being under .500 four of his five seasons wouldn’t cut it and Schwartz’s experience in Cleveland would be similar to Detroit’s. That said, given the connections some of these coaches have and the ways teams prefer specific hiring approaches, Cleveland may have been reluctant to a degree if they went with Schwartz.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Schwartz is the favorite for the New York Giants gig. So despite not being a head coach for a while, 2018 may be the year for Schwartz. Looks like another valuable coach will lead a team elsewhere.
