Two starting spots are there for the taking. Does Merritt earn one?

Lefty Ryan Merritt would benefit Cleveland as either a starter or a reliever. With that in mind, the Indians will have to make some tough decisions this spring, including what they are going to do with him.

That is because Merritt doesn’t any have more minor-league options. Without him, there will not be a lefty in the starting rotation. While Cleveland hasn’t had any qualms about not having one in the past, it is nice to have… even if it is not from the get-go.

Going up against Salazar and fellow right-handers Mike Clevinger and Josh Tomlin gives manager Terry Francona some flexibility on how he wants to construct his bullpen.

Tomlin can come in and be used in a long relief and as a spot duty starter. While Merritt’s MLB experience is limited (nine games and five starts to go along with a 3-0 record, 1.71 ERA, and a 1.137 WHIP in 31 2/3 innings), he takes the next step forward this spring and lands the fifth starter spot.

Clevinger ends up with the fourth spot while Salazar is put into a position to excel out of the bullpen. Keep in mind relievers Cody Allen and Andrew Miller are free agents after the season and at least one replacement will be needed.

Enter Salazar. In the meantime, Merritt continues to progress while Salazar impresses in a number of roles including starting as needed and available when someone struggles.
