Cleveland Browns: 2018 Mock Draft post-combine edition
By Ryan Rosko
Say hello to Cleveland’s fourth-round pick, Deontay Burnett, who will be Coleman’s replacement. Burnett joins Darnold, who would be his security blanket in the NFL. Smith-Schuster was initially the guy at USC but Burnett was solid as a sophomore before becoming Darnold’s top target last season.
In 2016, Burnett caught 56 passes for 622 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2017, Burnett topped that with 86 receptions for 1,114 yards, and nine receptions.
Burnett plays bigger than he is more often than not (6’0″ and 170-180 pounds). Whether he is on the outside running a go-route, an out-route, or simply as a decoy, Burnett gives DBs problems.
There are two areas of concern with Burnett’s game I would like to point out. There are others but these two are near the top of the list: His first step approach and breaking out of routes is not always finished with the same speed to achieve enough separation.
Burnett’s first step isn’t off by much but for his size, but I wish it was a tad bit faster. As far as his speed breaking out of routes, when I watched him I saw that issue improving but separation could still be improved upon. Being used often in motion and RPOs (run-pass options) helps hide those flaw.
You can’t beat an offense with eventually Darnold, Johnson, Freeman, Sutton, Burnett, Seth Devalve, David Njoku, and Josh Gordon.
