Nobody knows the Cleveland Indians farm system better than the Toronto Blue Jays and team president Mark Shapiro.

The two clubs already made a swap for Josh Donaldson and Julian Merrywether back in September. Could they play “Let’s make a deal?”

Teoscar Hernandez would help the Indians because he can play either corner outfield spot, and the outfield is where the Jays have some juggling to do.

Randall Grichuck looks like a lock for right field. Center fielder Kevin Pillar is the center field, although there is talk of trading the 30-year-old. Billy McKinney, the player acquired from the Yankees in the J.A. Happ deal, could play the other corner outfield spot.

That leaves Hernandez. The Jays could always finagle a way to DH their collection of outfield talent, but I’m the Indians, I try to pry him away.

The good: He bats right handed and hit 22 home runs in his first full Major League season.

The bad: He hit .239 with 163 strikeouts.

Ultimately, Hernandez needs more playing time at the big league level. He did some good things in 2018 and still possesses a lot of potential. I’d rather see the Indians try him than try to bandage the position with a Melky Cabrera type again.

The Jays are going to need starting pitching and the Indians can certainly oblige if the price is right.

Toronto will likely lose Happ and Marco Estrada. Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez (both have finger issues) may never return to their old forms.
