Cleveland Cavaliers: 4 impacts John Beilein hire will have on Cavs
3. Runs a system suited for the NBA
Beilein comes to Cleveland running a system well suited for the NBA.
His offense requires a heavy dose of 3-pointers, which is in lock-stop with today’s NBA.
This 2009 article from the New York Times highlighted the importance Belein placed on the long ball:
"“The most important drill for the Wolverines in practice, not surprisingly, is a 3-point shooting drill. Players take 50 3-pointers in five minutes, and they have to make a certain number to avoid having to run sprints.”"
The Cavs are the sharpshooting team they were en route to four Finals, but Collin Sexton improved significantly at shooting 3s and set the Cavs all-time rookie record. Cedi Osman has potential beyond the arc, and Kevin Love is as good a stretch four as you can get when he’s healthy.
Plus, there will be a couple of first-round picks coming to the franchise next month and it’s a good beat that at least one will have potential from 3-point territory.
Additionally, Beilein’s offense relies on a lot of movement with players around the perimeter. The option is still there for a player to drive to the basket from the top of the key. If the lane closes, they can kick out to the corners for 3.
I’m hoping the Cavs land Zion, but sounds like a perfect fit for Ja Morant.
