8. Kitchens wins coach of the year
If things go as planned this season, Freddie Kitchens will be be named the NFL’s coach of the year.
If the Browns win double-digit games for just the second time since 1999, how can he not?
Kitchens’ greatest tests are to come during the regular season, but he’s been impressive in how he’s managed his team through his first Training Camp and managing the egos of his star players.
As pundits chirped over Odell Beckham Jr.’s absence in minicamp and OTAs, Kitchens navigated the onslaught of questions.
Then, he made a statement in camp by running the ball heavily, sending the message that the Browns are going to be a tough, physical AFC North squad.
Most importantly, he’s going to call plays. Drawing up and calling the plays, while helping Baker Mayfield grow into a star is why Kitchens earned the job.
If Mayfield continues to thrive, the Browns are going to win. With Kitchens as the play caller, the national media will continue to notice, especially with the Browns playing regularly in primetime this season.
When it’s all said and done, the question as to how Kitchens was passed over for a heading coaching opportunity becomes even more confusing.
