Cleveland Indians: 5 realistic free agents worth targeting for 2020
3. Brian Dozier, 2B
Brian Dozier is only a seven-year veteran, but it seems like he’s been around for ever. It doesn’t seem all that long ago the guy was an All-Star for the Minnesota Twins.
Dozier is just a lifetime .245 hitter, but you’ bringing him in for his power. He hit 20 homers for the Nationals during the regular season. He’s hit 20 or more homers in each of his last seven seasons, although the 20 bombs are a far cry from the 42 he hit in 2016.
That said, he only played in 135 games this season, which was the lowest since his first full season in big leagues, when played in 147 for the Twins in 2013.
Dozier’s appeal is that he fills in the need at second base, and allows Jose Ramirez to stay at third. Finding someone to take over the Hot Corner is not going to be easy this offseason, so consider it a blessing Ramirez can stay at the spot. Finding a second baseman is much easier, which is why Dozier should be in play, despite the fact he’s 32.
Dozier, who posted a 0.7 WAR, made $9 million with the Nationals, but it’s unlikely he’ll be offered those types of figures once he hits the market.
He hits right handed, which offers some balance to the Tribe’s lineup and he’s spent most of his career in the Central. It makes sense, to at least explore brining him in.
