If the Indians want Todd Frazier, they should be in his price range.

Once upon a time, there were some pretty hot rumors linking the “Toddfather” to the Indians via trade. Those days are long ago though, as Frazier is now 34 and entering free agency after spending the past couple of seasons with the Mets.

He still possesses some pop, but he’s never been a guy who’s going to hit for average (.251, .772 OPS in 2019). He hit 21 bombs last year and has blamed 214 in his career.

If the Indians sign Frazier, it signals Jose Ramirez is moving to second base, and I’m not sure it’s the right move, because the hot corner would really suffer from a defensive stand point.

According to FanGraphs, Ramirez was the fifth best defensive third baseman in the game, while Frazier was 14th.

Thinking outside the box, perhaps Frazier is better suited to DH at this time of career anyways, which means the AL would be an attractive destination. He’ll possess the versatility to play third in a pinch, but the pressure of the grind won’t be there day in and day out.

That said, the Indians aren’t going to pay Frazier a few million to ride the pine or be a platoon DH.

Pencil in Ramirez at third base for the 2020 season, but you never know. If he moves to second, Frazier is a realistic option at third base because the market is so thin.
