2. Celtics give draft pick, Gordon Hayward

This one stems out of a trade proposal from last June. Hey, when you’re Kevin Love, the interweb is one vast wasteland of trade speculation.

Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz floated the idea of a three-team trade involving the Celtics, Cavs and Rockets. Why not jut cut the middle man out, though?

The Cavs would take on Gordon Hayward, but the crown jewel would be adding the Memphis draft pick Boston currently owns.

The Grizzlies pick is top-6 protected this year, but next year, there are no protections. Memphis is rebuilding, so there’s a good chance the Cavs could cash in on the pick in the 2021 draft if they can get it.

Danny Ainge has been pretty forthright about not wanting to deal Hayward, but GMs ALWAYS tell the truth. Hayward is earning $32.7 million this year and $34.2 next season (player option). That is a ton of money for a guy averaging 17.4 points per game.

Hayward would be crazy not to opt in next season, which means if he’s on the Cavs, Cleveland will have another expiring contract to move.

He makes a lot of money, but the Cavs may be able to flip him next season because only paying him for half a season is a little more palatable.

Again, for the Cavs, the key is draft pick. They’re lottery bound this year, and possibly next year, as well. Having two potential top five picks would go along way to finally move this franchise out of a post-LeBron rut.
