5. Baker Mayfield

Yes, it’s unfair to include Baker Mayfield on the “stock down” list. After all, he got the win and that’s a statistic Browns fans should never shrug off. So, let’s just call his stock “one to watch.”

A lot’s being written over the fact Mayfield hasn’t thrown an interception in three games. OK, well, he hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in that time frame, either. Yes, yes, the weather. I know. But how Mayfield missed those tight ends near the goal line in the first quarter is inexplicable.

Franchise quarterbacks don’t miss those throws. Those were points the Browns needed to get at the time, especially in a weird weather game where every point in critical.

In Mayfield’s defense, he’s thrown 15 touchdowns. That’s as many as Lamar Jackson. He has a 65.9 QBR, which ranks 18th. That’s just under Ben Roethlisberger’s mark of 66.3 and better than that of Jackson and Joe Burrow.

The Browns shouldn’t be in a hurry to make any definitive actions regarding Mayfield’s future. He becomes eligible for an extension after the season, but I think it’s more likely the team picks up his fifth-year option, rather than throwing a bunch of money at him.

There’s no harm in taking this route. After all, that’s what the option is there for, so Cleveland might as well use it as long his status a true franchise quarterback hangs in limbo.
