The Cleveland Indians are going to be bargain shopping this year during free agency and one of those names should be former Cubs player Kyle Schwarber.

For many, the name Kyle Schwarber brings back bad memories of the 2016 World Series. Yet, it should be noted that the Indians aren’t in a position where past grudges can be allowed to linger. Despite the amount of hype Joe Buck gave Schwarber, and the amount of ill will the Indians fanbase may have towards him, the Indians need some cheap power, and Schwarber may be that guy to bring it.

Schwarber is still young, as he’ll only be 28 during the 2021 season, and has a history of inconsistent play. That means that he won’t be getting a massive contract. Cleveland could probably come in around $5-$6 million a year and get him for two years. After all, it’s not like he’s played well enough to warrant anything better, or longer.

Yes, he has power, hitting 26 home runs or more from 2017 to 2019, but it’s his consistency at the plate that has been his biggest issue. Currently, he’s only got a career batting average of .230 and has twice hit below .220 for a season. That’s a big glaring hole to worry about.

However, the Indians have been pretty good at getting the most out of players, pitching or otherwise. The idea that the Indians couldn’t get him to be more consistent isn’t something to worry about. They’ve had success in the past, so why not try it?

Not only would his power be a welcomed addition to the Indians lineup, but he’s a versatile player, being able to play defensively at any outfield spot, first base, and even catcher. Sure, you wouldn’t start him over Roberto Perez, but as a backup? Heck yeah. That’ would be such a huge get for the Tribe, who are constantly looking for players just like Schwarber, who can play a variety of positions.
