5 Cleveland Indians stocks that are soaring before Opening Day
2. Trevor Stephan, RP
The Indians nabbed Trevor Stephan from the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft, and it’s going to be hard for the Tribe to just give him back. That’s what they’ll have to do if Stephens doesn’t make the roster, per the rules of that draft.
The righty has been throwing smoke in relief, with fastball that regularly clocks in the upper 90s. His breaking ball is probably good enough to get by, for now.
Stephens’ spring training resume is pretty impressive. He’s appeared in six games, and five of those contests have been gems. In making his case for a roster spot with those five frames as snapshot, Stephan’s struck out six, while walking one and and allowing three hits and zero runs.
It hasn’t been all perfect, though, as Stephan allowed four hits and two runs during his inning of work against the Dodgers on March 12.
That’s been the only setback, though, as the 25-year-old has impressed.
At this point, he has to have a shot to make the team considering the sense of urgency surrounding his status. In a perfect world, the Indians would pull a trade off with New York to keep Stephan in the system. If the Yankees have been paying any attention, though, they won’t just give him away.
