Cavs: Will ‘Core 4’ finally win, or just PR Spin?
1. Cavs PG/SG Collin Sexton
What was said: He’s top 20 in scoring after year 3.
He’s arguably the most polarizing player on the Cavs. His fans love him and will go the ends of the earth to defend his game.
It’s hard to argue with them since Sexton averaged 24.3 points and 4.4 assists per game, bth career highs.
The Cavs have built him up as the star of the new era, and now the chickens are coming home to roost, as Sexton will almost certainly win demand an max-contract extension.
Is he worth it, though? Think back to when the Cavs extended Kyrie Irving coming off his rookie deal. Was there any doubt as to what they should do?
This time it’s different, because while Sexton can be great, he lacks “it.” In the age of analytics where everything is analyzed and measured to the nth degree, I’m aware that explanation won’t fly with Sexton defenders.
I think he can be a great complimentary player playing alongside an alpha, but the Cavs just don’t have that right now.
Verdict: Sexton is not a part of the future. I get the feeling that if the Cavs strike gold and land Cade Cunningham, they’ll ditch him like yesterday’s news.
