Cleveland Indians: 6 trades targeted by The Athletic’s Jim Bowden
6. Cleveland Indians trade target: Marco Gonzales
The final name Bowden threw out was that of Mariners pitcher Marco Gonzales. The seven-year vet has a career 42-31 mark, but has struggled this season, going 1-4 with a 5.44 ERA.
It hasn’t been a great start, but players usually fluctuate back to their career averages.
Prior to 2021, Gonzales had been very good. He was 13-9 with a 4.00 ERA in 2018, 16-13 with a 3.99 ERA in 2019 and 7-2 with a 3.10 ERA last season.
Ultimately, I don’t see the Tribe taking a risk on him because his contract pays him $24 million between 2022-2024. He’s due $15 million in 2025, but that’s a club option.
Gibson would be the top choice of the two, but the Indians certainly won’t be the only ones calling Texas to inquire.
Still, with the Indians claiming to have been ravaged financially by the pandemic, I can’t see them making a play on Gonzalez.
