This is the one trade that I would do if I were in Koby Altman’s position. Lauri Markkanen has been mismanaged his entire run in Chicago. If the Cavs can find a way to rid themselves of Kevin Love, then Markkanen could be a huge asset for the franchise going forward. When giving the minutes he can put up decent rebounding numbers and while he’s no Rudy Gobert, Markkanen is an improvement defensively over Love.

We’ve seen what he can do offensively when he has the minutes to produce and has shown to be a viable three-point shooter at his position.

While you’re downgrading from Collin Sexton to Coby White, you’re also getting back another building block piece in Markkanen on top of White, so it’s not like you’re getting just some bench player.

Losing Cedi Osman in the trade only if J.B. Bickerstaff intended to use Osman as the Hedo Turkoglu of the Cavs; where he gets ball-handling duties on the second team. He’s shown to have the ability to handle that type of assignment but Bickerstaff has soured on Osman it seems, so if you’re not going to use him as you should, the best bet would be to trade someone who fits more of what you want to do.

That’s why this trade and not the first Bulls trade works. Better assets and the Cavs aren’t getting gouged in the trade.
