Browns: The 5 players Cleveland should cut come Tuesday
By Chad Porto
TE Connor Davis
This selection could’ve been either of the Davis’. Connor Davis had fewer receptions than Davion Davis against the Jaguars, and neither player really impressed. Both are likely to get cut but if you’re going to be picking names to let go of first and Connor seems like the Davis to go.
Since we didn’t see much of what Connor Davis can do as a blocker, we have to rely on his pass-catching skills. The Browns are deep at pass catchers (be it receiver or tight end), even with the injury to Stephen Carlson. Not necessarily with that level of talent, this isn’t the 2001 Rams, after all, but with potential.
There’s potential that Austin Hooper, Jarvis Landry, and Odell Beckham Jr. are healthy for the first time in a while. There’s potential that Harrison Bryant and Donovan Peoples-Jones continue to mature as playmakers. There’s potential that rookies Demetric Felton and Anthony Schwartz turn into the stars the team hopes they can be.
That’s a handful of pass-catchers the Browns have on their roster. That doesn’t even include KhaDarrel Hodge, David Njoku, Rashard Higgins, JarMarcus Bradley, Jojo Natson, and Ryan Switzer.
There’s really no hope, rhyme, or reason for Connor Davis to make the team (or Davion if we’re being honest). Even the Browns lost Carlson, Davis seems like an easy cut to make. Not like after the third preseason game, where 17 names have to be let go of.
It’s a sad reality but that’s the NFL.
