Browns Game Recap: Ugly win still a win in this week’s 3 Good and 3 Bad
By Chad Porto
The Bad
Baker Mayfield
While Baker Mayfield did have some reasons for his bad play, the injures and the weather being two, his two interceptions were just bad and on him. Maybe the first one got away from him, he overthrew Jarvis Landry and hit a Lions player dead center. The second interception, however, was just a bad decision, as he tried to force it into double-coverage. This isn’t uncommon of Mayfield, as he has a tendency to slip into “force mode” when the team struggles and the team did struggle.
The Offensive Line
Talk to me about “win rates” again and see what happens. The Browns offensive line is far from what it was last year and it isn’t just the declining play of Jedrick Wills or the loss of Jack Conklin. It’s the sheer fact that they’re making consistent mistakes that are killing drives. If you gain 20 yards on a play and then get called for a 15-yard penalty, you didn’t cost the team 20 yards, you cost them 35 yards. This was a big issue in the Lions game all day and has been a recurring issue all season long.
Kevin Stefanski’s Play Calling
Kevin Stefanski over-relies on Nick Chubb as his magic eraser for making bad calls, and we saw that again today. The Browns are an undisciplined team offensively and that solely lands on the head coach.
