Rookie of the Year – Evan Mobley
Evan Mobley may not be the Defensive Player of the Year in my eyes, but he’s the runaway for Rookie of the Year. There isn’t a single rookie in the year who has his numbers, his efficiency, or his importance to a playoff-caliber team. It’s really not even a debate. What Mobley has done as a rookie is impressive.
Even just looking at the Cavs past rookies, there’s only been a handful of men that changed the course of this team as newbies, and the last was LeBron James. Yes, Mobley, unlike other past Cavs rookies, has a great team around him. So maybe comparing him to Kyrie Irving isn’t fair. That said, Mobley has been an obvious and integral part of the team; playing and playing well on both sides of the court.
He really doesn’t have much competition. Cade Cunningham is streaky at best, and Scottie Barnes doesn’t have the same impact defensively as Mobley does. Though one could argue Barnes is more integral to the Raptors offense than Mobley is to the Cavs and that is fair.
He’s really Mobley’s only real competition right now but loses out because the Cavs are 13-10 and the Raptors are 10-13. Mobley is a big reason the Cavaliers are in the playoff race, and it’s clear that as good as Barnes is, he isn’t impacting the Raptors the same way.
