5 backup QBs Browns should sign to push Baker Mayfield in 2022
1. Browns potential Baker Mayfield backup: Mitch Trubisky
The Mentor native’s talent was great enough to elevate him to the second pick in the NFL Draft. Things didn’t work out in Chicago, but you wonder what Mitch Trubisky would look like playing behind a healthy Browns offensive line, with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt as your backfield mates.
He doesn’t need to be Patrick Mahomes. He needs to be better than Mayfield, and, yeah, I know, No. 6 was injured. But Mayfield’s performance is not a high bar to pass.
Trubisky made $2.5 million this year, backing up Josh Allen in Buffalo. If Andrew Berry could get him for less than what Case Keenum is making (around $7 million) Cleveland should be interested.
With Trubisky in the mix, Mayfield could comfortably enter the season as the starter, but as a lame-duck quarterback (assuming he doesn’t have his extension), the seat will get hot, fast, if Mayfield doesn’t perform.
Clevelanders know how popular a backup quarterback can be, so you know what the calls for the local kid will sound like if Mayfield falls flat.
If Mayfield is healthy, he’ll have nothing to worry about. If the losses and picks start to mount, they’ll have the Trubisky card to play.
