The Cleveland Browns would be making a mistake to bring back Case Keenum in 2022. His contract is massive for what he provides, which is a slow, plodding offense and no real ability to push the action down the field if the team needs big plays. If the team wants to turn the team over to him, then you build around what he does best; short-yardage stuff, and emphasize pass-catching backs.

The team isn’t looking to turn the team over to him, so he remains an overpaid backup with a history of losing games. There’s no reason to continue to pay him what he’s getting, knowing full well he isn’t capable of being more than he is.

Hence Mitchell Trubisky. He got a bad rap in Chicago; his head coach was awful and besides one other player, his offense was poorly built. He’ll be a more affordable backup, plus he has Cleveland roots, which is always great. More than that, if Baker Mayfield can’t look like his 2018/2020 version in 2022, then he’ll need to be replaced. Potentially mid-season if he doesn’t come back ready to go. Someone like Trubisky could bridge the gap in that case; maybe even warrant a more prolonged look heading into 2023.

The Browns are not going to waste a Top 100 pick on a quarterback this year, so if they want to shake up the quarterback room, Trubisky is the way to go.
