CB Greg Newsome

The Cleveland Browns needed to bolster their secondary for the 2021 season. They did just that, though to mixed results. The team signed away two ex-Rams in John Johnson III and Troy Hill. Hill was fantastic with Cleveland, while Johnson; not so much. The team also drafted a few defensive players, with the most notable secondary player being Greg Newsome; their first-round pick.

Not a “sexy” pick by any means but he was drafted to fill a need and did just that. The Browns retooled their secondary to make sure they could utilize the defense scheme that defensive coordinator Joe Woods wanted to implement. They succeeded and the Browns defense was among the most impactful in the league.

Part of that improvement was due to Newsome, who had a great rookie campaign for the team. He’s the kind of guy who you can see developing into a Pro Bowler in a year or two, easily. He’s physical and works well in this defensive scheme, something that all the cornerbacks the team employs (at least the top four) all seem to be able to embrace. They’re all physical tacklers who don’t get bullied.

It’s very likely that in a couple of years Newsome, Denzel Ward, and Greedy Williams could all be Pro Bowlers in the same year. Now, how cool would that be?
